Flooring Products and Tariffs: What You Should Know

You’ve likely heard on the news about tariffs being implemented with China for products shipped into the United States. This will impact the flooring industry as many of these products come from China. In fact, China is one of the largest producers of flooring products that are purchased by American consumers.

An additional 15 percent tariff (above the 10 percent already in place) was scheduled to take effect January 1, 2019. Recently, the White House signed an agreement with China to delay implementation of the additional tariff for approximately 90 days. Most likely the additional tariff will still be taking effect, but the exact date for implementation is still to be determined.

Flooring Tariffs

The tariff will affect specified products manufactured in China. All flooring that comes from China is included, such as luxury vinyl, engineered hardwood, ceramic tile and carpet. Once the tariffs take effect, the price for flooring products will likely increase to account for the extra expense. In fact, some flooring manufacturers, including Shaw and Armstrong, have already responded by increasing prices.

We just want customers to be aware of these changes and the results that are likely to come from it. In addition to selling products from China,we also sell many American-made flooring products that will not be affected by tariffs. This is just something to keep in mind when shopping for new flooring.

We obviously don’t know all the details yet or how the tariffs will ultimately affect our industry, but we most likely will see more changes in the coming year. As always, our top priority at Hopkins Carpet One is to provide quality flooring with exceptional service.
