Summer Floor Care Tips

While enjoying the warm, sunny days of summer, you should be aware of the effects this time of year can have on your flooring. Summertime typically brings extra activity, higher humidity and more direct sunlight. Here are some tips to keep your floors in good shape throughout the season.

Vacuum Regularly
Whether you have carpet or hard surface flooring, regular vacuuming is a must. Try to vacuum at least once weekly to remove dust particles and fine grit like sand. This will protect your flooring from scratches and keep it looking nice. Just be sure to only use the beater bar on carpet. A bare floor attachment should be used for all other floors.

Doormat to Protect FloorUse a Doormat
Try to prevent as much dirt as possible from getting on your floors by using doormats at all entrances. Summer tends to bring more traffic with kids running in and out bringing mud, dirt and grit with them. Door mats can catch the majority of these particles to keep them from soiling your carpet or damaging your hard surface flooring.

Reduce Sunlight on Floors
Use blinds and curtains to keep your floors from being exposed to direct sunlight. Too much sunlight can cause fading or discoloration of flooring. You don’t have to keep the blinds closed all the time, just when the sun is directly shining on the floors. This will also keep your home cooler, helping you save on air conditioning costs.

Dehumidify
High humidity levels during the summer can affect your flooring in adverse ways. This is especially true for hardwood floors, which tend to expand when humidity levels are high. To prevent cupping or warping of your floors, aim to keep the humidity level in your home between 35-55 percent. Installing a de-humidifier can help maintain the proper level. Running your air conditioner can help too. Remember that the opposite is true in the winter, when heated air becomes dry causing cracking and splitting.

Follow these floor care tips and you can enjoy the long summer days without stressing about your home’s flooring.
