Update on Flooring Products and Tariffs

We did a blog in December about tariffs for flooring products that are shipped to the United States from China. We want to provide an update, since those tariffs have now been fully implemented.

A 10 percent tariff was put in place last year. An additional 15 percent was going to take effect January 1, but the implementation was pushed back, and just took effect May 10. Now, tariffs on China imports are at 25 percent.

As mentioned in our previous blog, China is the largest producer of flooring products that are purchased by American consumers. In fact, roughly 75 percent of the products we sell in our store are made in China. There’s no doubt these new tariffs will have a large impact on the flooring industry.

Flooring TariffsFlooring manufacturers and distributors have come together and decided to increase their pricing on flooring products from China starting June 1. The price on the products may not go up exactly 25 percent as some distributors may try to absorb some of the cost; however, you can be sure prices on flooring from China will go up significantly. This increased pricing will then be seen in flooring stores, including here at Hopkins Carpet One.

What this means for you
Don’t be shocked the next time you go shopping for home or office flooring. We want our customers to be aware that the tariffs will have a huge impact. You will likely see a large difference in pricing between products made in the U.S. and those made in China. Many types of flooring only come from China. Due to technology and manufacturing needs, it will take time for U.S. flooring manufacturers to catch up, meaning you won’t immediately see these products being made in America. Over time, more American flooring companies may be able to make these other products, but time will tell.

It’s also important to note that making a flooring order before June 1 won’t guarantee better pricing. Depending on when products ship and how much is already in stock will determine when prices change. We’ve been doing our best to warn customers about pricing changes. Unfortunately, some prices may change without notice, even if we’ve already provided you with an estimate. Please keep this in mind as you shop.

Since 1980, we have served the Minneapolis area with quality flooring and installation. We don’t plan to change that! Please just understand that these price increases are out of our control. We will continue to do our best to offer quality products at fair prices. Your understanding as we transition with the impact of these tariffs is greatly appreciated.

If you have additional questions about the tariffs and how they will affect flooring prices, please don’t hesitate to ask. We will do our best to keep you informed of any additional changes. Feel free to give us a call at 952-933-8944 or contact us.
